Hello everyone!
Firstly I just want to thank so many of you for subscribing to my new substack, Unprocess, in the past few days! It’s great to have you all here, and I can’t wait to start getting to know you all and creating a community of people who want to think about how changing the food on their plate could not only change their physical and mental health, but also have a ripple affect outwards to their family, their relationships, their sense of happiness and contentment, and even to the environment and the future of the planet.
This week, I’m hoping that some of those ripples will be spread by the launch of my book on Thursday, which will hopefully get people thinking about what they put in their trolley, what the impact of ‘convenience’ might be - and indeed, whether it is even ‘convenience’ at all. What false promises have we been made? And how can we break free from this toxic relationship?
I’m excited to tell you that myself and the book were featured in today’s Times newspaper, and to let you have a share token so you can read the piece…
I hope you enjoy the piece. I’m leaving comments below open to all, so let me know your thoughts, or if you have any questions…
If you prefer to take on info via a podcast, here is a chat I had with Angela Foster at High Performance Health…
The Times article refers to some of the research about the ways in which UPF affects the female body. I talked through a few such examples on an instagram live yesterday, so I’m sharing that here too…
And if you missed it, these specific ways that UPF affects the female body were also featured in the Daily Mail last week.
You can read this piece here (archived so no paywall)
We will have much to talk about here on Unprocess. I hope to offer you a combination of research, news and evidence alongside practical ideas and suggestions for change. It will be nice to create a collaborative atmosphere, too, and I am sure before long we will all be chatting in the comments or in the Unprocess area of the Substack app, sharing thoughts, experiences and recipes.
For now though, I will say goodbye and continue with quite a busy week!
Don’t forget you can get half price off an annual sub to Unprocess for the whole of July - that’s just £17.50 for a whole year’s sub.
Best to you all, Milli x
Fascinating, thank you for these articles, the Mail one needs re-reading, and some note-taking, it's so information-dense!
Re your comment on Ozempic in the Times article: our natural GLP-1 hormone can be boosted by eating nutrient-dense foods like nuts, whole grains, etc, which you are recommending, but you don't make the specific link - or have I missed it elsewhere?
You also emphasise plant-based diet: why no exploration of the benefits of meat, eg the bioavailability of iron from red meat is orders of magnitude higher than from plant sources. Not to mention, it also stimulates GLP-1! So many studies conflate eg steaks with hamburgers (they are in no way the same thing). I've read many scientists, nutritionists, doctors, arguing that the bad outcomes attributed to 'meat' are more likely to be down to 'UPF meat'. They also often say the harms are 'not proven', and more research is required. No surprise, from scientists...
