Hi I’m Lucy, also a mum of three. This is my first paid for substack subscription, mainly because food and feminism are two of my special interests. (My others are parkrun and our hunter gatherer past - I sometimes wish the agricultural revolution had never happened.)
I am lucky enough to work part-time and I feel like a HUGE proportion of my time off is spent on food prep (and doing the washing up it generates). I would love to know how on earth people who work full time (and don’t have a wife) manage it. Most of the time my kids don’t even eat what I’ve made which is slightly depressing. Feeding 3 fussy kids is HARD.
Hi Lucy!! It's so great to have you here!! And omg we will have a lot to talk about with the 3 fussy kids thing! I have one who used to be ridiculously fussy and is now a happy omnivore, one who is extremely fussy and maybe has some sensory issues, and one with huge allergies! Nightmare! But let's work on fast easy meals that are not UPF, I hope to bring as much of that as I can because I think they benefit everyone not just families xx
Hello - I’m Lynn - a retired midwife - I have 3 adult children and 7 grandchildren - my family have always been obsessed with food - I have a history of greed and dietary fads - with a daughter who was a ‘natural vegan body builder’ at one time (between having babies 2 and 3 of 4) a son who’s a chef and another who was a professional sportsman who had dieticians constantly… it’s fair to say food is important. These days I’m half the woman I was l, still obsessed with food vegetarian and low dairy - but being retired I cook most everything from scratch. Because I lived in a remote location on an island for some years I’m pretty good with store cupboard staples - I use a lot of dried foods nuts and fruit etc. my food prep this evening wasn’t unusual - soaking turtle beans and chickpeas to cook in morning - cake mix soaking - porridge soaking - coconut yoghurt maturing - kombucha topped up… I’m not virtue signalling - just showing how food rules my life… every day. I’ve tried ‘not being so bothered’ but then I eat more rubbish put on weight and feel crap - so as I have the time and interest this is what I do. So there - it’s obvious why Milli’s fab book and Substack interests me.
Hi. Last year I spent some time trying to eat low UPF (I read Chris Van Tulken's book in May 24), and I did feel the benefit, lost weight, sleep improved etc.
I was then quite ill in January this year and have had to eat a specific diet. A lot of the foods available to me to meet the diet I needed from January were highly processed.
It was a lot to get my head around, that that type of highly processed food was the best for my health at that time having actively tried to avoid it previously. 6 months post Jan I am 90% recovered, post surgery, and have a much wider diet with fewer restrictions. I want to get back into a low UPF mindset and this subscription plus the book are my stepping stones :)
