There are some UPFs that have become so ubiquitous that most of us have never made them ourselves, and I think we also imagine they will be very difficult to make, too! So in this section of Unprocess I’ll be sharing recipes for ‘UPF standards’ - those food items that we have just come to accept have to be bought from a shop - and hopefully encouraging you to make them yourselves, if not every time you eat them, at least some of the time. Making things can make us happy, whether it’s painting a picture, writing a poem, knitting a pair of socks or baking a quiche.
I know there is a trend on social media towards ‘perfection’. You will find the opposite here. I won’t be putting on make up or using filters to make myself look flawless. My kitchen you can take as you find. I will share some of my chaotic family life or let you see my dogs. What I don’t want to do is create an ‘us and them’ vibe where you feel that what you are watching is not really obtainable for you (as I sometimes feel when watching Instagram videos of immaculate marble kitchens).
The food will also be basic. I sometimes think that online recipes and cookery programmes must feel pressure to ‘jazz things up’ because they want to stand out and be different. But that’s not what this section will be about. The Real Thing will showcase the simple stuff, the kind of stuff many of us have lost the skills to make. And then you can jazz it up as you see fit.
We will also look at cost and compare the cost of the UPF version with The Real Thing. Rumour has it making your own versions is impossibly expensive. Is this even true?
So without further ado, let’s make a quiche! If you’ve only ever had shop bought quiche, this will be the best quiche you’ve ever tasted!
